Wahine cruise at Kama‘aina Tournament
The University of Hawaii softball team hit five home runs, three in the first inning, and closed the Kama‘aina Tournament with a 16-1 win over Chaminade on Saturday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Homers by Rachel Lack, Leisha Li‘ili‘i and Heather Morales gave UH a 4-0 lead in the first. Kayla Wartner hit a three-run shot in the second and Kristina Akiona went deep to lead off to bottom of the third.
Morales also got the pitching start and held Chaminade to two hits over three innings and was credited with the win. UH closed the tournament at 3-0.
Earlier in the day, Hawaii Hilo routed Chaminade 15-0 and defeated BYU-Hawaii 8-0 to finish the weekend at 2-1.
In Friday’s late game, Morales hit a pair of two-run home runs in UH’s 10-0 win over UH-Hilo. Wahine freshman Brittany Hitchcock held the Vulcans to four hits in a complete-game victory.
Chen back as Seasiders roll in 4 sets
Shih Ting (Stella) Chen returned after missing last night’s match to lead BYU-Hawaii to a 20-25, 25-21, 25-20, 25-21 women’s volleyball victory over Cal Baptist on Saturday at Van Dyne Gym in Riverside, Calif.
A day after sitting out with a back injury, Chen led all players with 21 kills and 13 digs. Erh Fang (Ariel) Hsu added 10 kills and Sinamoni Tonga had eight kills and a .421 hitting percentage for the Seasiders (19-5, 16-2 PacWest). Elizabeth Blake Solaita also had a strong outing with 45 assists and four service aces.
» The Hawaii Pacific women’s volleyball team played its final mainland match of the season on Saturday, dropping a four-set decision to Dixie State 25-14, 25-20, 23-25, 25-19 in Utah.
Poor passing in serve receive led to a .104 hitting percentage for the Sharks (14-10, 12-6 PacWest) as opposed to .271 for the Red Storm (18-8, 15-3).
Kasey Thompson led HPU with 13 kills. Pomai Recca contributed 11 kills and 15 digs. Marie Fujii was the primary setter with 32 assists to go with her 11 digs.
PK difference in ‘Swords men’s soccer win
A penalty kick by Nicolas Ferro that found the back of the net in the 43rd minute gave the Chaminade men’s soccer team a season-ending 1-0 Pacific West Conference victory Saturday over BYU-Hawaii at St. Louis Field.
Despite the loss, the Seasiders (6-6-5, 6-2-4 PacWest) finished the season tied for second place with Fresno Pacific and Notre Dame de Namur in the conference with 22 points.
Chaminade (6-10, 5-7) tied for seventh in the PacWest.
HPU women prevail with goal in second OT
Junior forward Erika Ellis put an exclamation point on the Hawaii Pacific women’s soccer team’s season Saturday, leading the Sharks to a 2-1 double-overtime victory against Hawaii Hilo in a Pacific West Conference thriller on the Big Island.
In the 105th minute of the second overtime, Ellis, a Lanakila Baptist graduate from Waianae, controlled a pass from Ashlyn Ubongen and scored the winning goal, Ellis’ second of the match and 12th of the year.
HPU finished the season tied for third in the conference with Azusa Pacific at 8-3-1. HPU was 11-4-2 overall.
After a scoreless first half, Ellis broke the tie with a header at the 48:16 mark, but an own goal by HPU gave Hawaii Hilo (7-5-6, 4-4-4) new life and forced overtime.
HPU outshot Hawaii Hilo 14-5 and Sharks goalkeeper Kelby Boswell made four saves.
» Kate Orchard scored in the 62nd minute on a penalty kick, and McKenzie Evans tacked on an insurance goal three minutes later to lead visiting BYU-Hawaii to a 2-0 win over Chaminade in a PacWest season finale at Saint Louis Field.
The Seasiders ended the season at 4-13 overall and 3-9 in the PacWest. The Silverswords (3-11-1, 3-8-1 PacWest) experienced their best season since beginning play in 2006, setting a program record for wins.
