Kauai mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. says there should be more discussion about designating a Niihau County.

Kauai Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. and his 22 top level cabinet members would get their first raises in five years under a plan approved by the county Salary Commission Monday, The Kauai Garden Island reported Tuesday.

The mayor’s salary would climb from $114,490 to $122,504. The plan still needs to reviewed and approved by the mayor and the county council.

The salary of the Managing Director Nadine Nakamura would be increased from $110,197 to $117,911.

Also increased under the plan would be the salaries of top level department heads which would climb from $107,335 to $114,848.

Carvalho initiated a pay freeze in 2008 for top-level employees which officials saved the county $1.4 million.
