Kaanapali Beach on Maui has reopened following a shark attack Thursday afternoon.
A 50-year-old tourist from Homer, Alaska, was bitten on the leg by a sharkand suffered a 12-inch bite on the upper left leg. He was treated at Maui Memorial Medical Center.
State Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement officials said the incident happened at 1:30 p.m. Thursday
Kaanapali Beach was then closed from Kahekili Beach Park to the Black Rock area. The shoreline was reopened following a helicopter flyover of the area by state conservation officeers in which no sharks were spotted.
State officials said the victim of the attack was snorkeling in 20 feet of water, which he described as clear.
He caught a glimpse of the shark, about 5 feet long, then “felt a bump and then immediate pain,” state officials said.
