BYU-Hawaii advances in NCAA II volleyball regional

Senior All-American hitter ShihTing “Stella” Chen put down a match-high 27 kills to help No. 9 Brigham Young-Hawaii defeat Central Washington 19-25, 25-17, 25-17, 25-19 in a NCAA II West Regional quarterfinal volleyball match Thursday in Nampa, Idaho.

Sophomore opposite Noel Pauga Wolman added 18 kills and senior middle Erh Fang “Ariel” Hsu 13 for the fifth-seeded Seasiders (22-5). Both Chen and Pauga Wolman finished with double-doubles when coming up with 17 and 10 digs, respectively.

Freshman libero Ashley Mataele had 29 of the team’s 89 digs and junior middle Kalistina Takau was in on seven of the eight blocks against the fourth-seeded Wildcats (19-8).

BYU-Hawaii, which finished second nationally last year, will face the winner of Thursday’s last quarterfinal between top-seeded and host Northwest Nazarene and Pac-West runner-up Dixie State in Friday’s second semifinal. Friday’s first semifinal final pits CCAA rivals Sonoma State against Cal State San Bernardino. Seventh-seeded Sonoma State upset No. 2-seed Alaska Anchorage in four while CSUSB, seeded sixth, turned back third-seeded Western Washington in four.
