Rescuers on lookout for distressed boater
The Coast Guard was searching for a boater after receiving his mayday call reporting flooding in his small boat about 50 miles west of Kailua-Kona.
The guard received the radio call Thursday morning. In an audio clip of the call provided by the Coast Guard, a man is heard saying he’s in danger of sinking. The Coast Guard says he provided a GPS position before communications were lost.
The description of the vessel and number of people onboard are unknown, but the Coast Guard said a review of the recording of the call indicates the boat may be the Molea or Malia.
An HC-130 Hercules airplane and an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point are searching the area. The Coast Guard cutter Ahi was expected to join the search at about midnight Thursday.
