A 45-year-old Kapaa man was charged with theft after he allegedly tried to steal copper pipes from the shuttered Coco Palms Resort on Kauai.

David Byers was charged Friday with copper theft and second-degree burglary. He was set to be arraigned at District Court Friday afternoon. A preliminary hearing is scheduled to be held Tuesday before Judge Trudy Senda.

Byers is being held in lieu of $2,000 bail.

At about 12:50 p.m. Wednesday, police responded to a report of a suspicious person on the property. When officers arrived, Byers allegedly was seen pushing a wheelchair with a 33-gallon garbage bin filled with copper pipes.
