High surf forecast for 5 isles’ north shores
A high-surf advisory for the north shores of most islands has been extended through Sunday evening.
The northwest swell that has generated advisory-level surf weakened Saturday, but another north-northwest swell will rapidly push surf back into advisory levels throughout Sunday, according to forecasters at the National Weather Service.
The advisory covers the north and west shores of Niihau, Kauai, Oahu and Molokai, and the north shores of Maui until 6 p.m. Sunday.
The swell for north shores was expected to reach 18 to 22 feet overnight. Surf on the west shores is expected to rise to 8 to 12 feet throughout Sunday.
Beachgoers are advised to heed all advice given by lifeguards.
Waiawa visits canceled, moved to Sunday
The Department of Public Safety canceled regularly scheduled visitation to the Waiawa Correctional Facility on Saturday.
Such cancellations have been an almost weekly occurrence this year as a result of ongoing staffing shortages as the department battles chronic absenteeism.
Visitation at Waiawa has been rescheduled for Sunday. The last cancellation at Waiawa was June 1, due to a blackout from a downed power line.
2 crashes leave 1 dead, 1 hurt
Two crashes on the same highway on Kauai on Saturday left one driver dead and a second in critical condition.
The fatal crash happened around 10 a.m. on Kaumualii Highway in Kipu. A Ford pickup truck was heading east near Halfway Bridge and attempted to overtake a Ford Mustang using the eastbound shoulder of the highway, Kauai police said.
The truck clipped the Mustang’s front, then veered onto the westbound lane and broadsided a Chevy sedan. The male driver of the Chevy died.
The driver of the pickup was transported to Wilcox Hospital, where he was treated and released. The female driver of the Mustang did not require medical attention, police said.
Earlier, a 22-year-old Kalaheo woman was hospitalized after a crash on Kaumualii Highway in Kipu.
Near the Kauai Humane Society at 2:30 a.m., her Nissan SUV veered off the road and struck a guardrail and utility pole. She was transported to Wilcox Hospital with critical injuries, then medevaced to Honolulu for further treatment.
