A little less than a year after watching Hawaii celebrate a comeback win, Pacific got a measure of payback Saturday night with a 69-61 victory over the Rainbow Wahine basketball team.
UOP guard Hailie Eackles drained three 3-pointers and scored all of her 13 points in the second half to spark the Tigers before a crowd of 691 at the Stan Sheriff Center. Pacific center Kendall Kenyon finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds as the Tigers avenged an 81-70 home loss to UH in Stockton, Calif., last December in which the Wahine stormed back from an 18-point deficit.
"It’s hard to win here — everybody knows that," UOP coach Lynne Roberts said. "That alone, it is a good achievement and Hawaii’s a good team, they’re going to have a great year, so this is a good win for our program."
Shawna-Lei Kuehu scored a game-high 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in her third double-double performance of the season. Ashleigh Karaitiana and Morgan Mason added 10 points each, but the Wahine shot 35.4 percent from the field and went 3-for-16 from 3-point range in their third straight defeat.
In contrast, UOP went 8-for-18 behind the arc and the theme was similar to UH’s previous two losses to Stanford and North Carolina, in which UH misfired from the field while the opposition knocked down shots from the perimeter.
"One of those games. We didn’t hit shots again that we needed to," UH coach Laura Beeman said. "We called the game plan, we knew exactly what was going to happen, we just weren’t able to hit shots."
Roberts said the Tigers don’t play much zone normally but elected to on Saturday to counter UH’s size advantage inside in a game plan devised by former UH assistant coach Gavin Petersen.
Beeman said the Wahine expected the zone, and UH’s zone offense should be able to produce "layups and paint shots, because we know we can’t hit 3s on a consistent basis right now."
"With that said we need to be able to slow ourselves down, hit the paint shots, the easy chippies, not turn the ball over and we’ve got to stop giving up so many 3-pointers," she said.
"We didn’t attack as often as we should have," said Mason, UH’s point guard. "When we did get it in the post it worked well and we got good shots, so we kind of strayed away from that."
Eackles entered the game averaging 11.3 points but picked up two fouls in a scoreless first half as UH took a 31-29 lead into the break. She scored UOP’s first bucket of the second half with a steal leading to a layup and later drained back-to-back 3-pointers to cap a 13-1 run that gave the Tigers a 44-34 lead.
The Tigers maintained control into the final minute, but UH stayed within striking distance when Shawlina Segovia hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead to four with 37.1 seconds left.
UOP’s Unique Coleman came up with two steals down the stretch and the Tigers pulled away from the free-throw line.
"It comes down to being locked in at that moment in the game and playing with each other and that’s what we didn’t do," Kuehu said.
"We didn’t play with each other this game and that’s what we need to keep doing and make the changes necessary so we don’t lose like this again."
UH now has a week off before returning to the Sheriff Center to face BYU-Hawaii on Saturday.
