Public warned to stay out of brown water at Maui surf spot

The state Health Department are warning swimmers and surfers to stay out of the water at the popular West Maui surf spot, where a fatal shark attack happened in 2004, because of brown water conditions.

Ocean Safety officials notified the Health Department about the turbid water dconditions at S Turn, a surfing break at Pohaku Beach Park near Napilii on West Maui, prompting the alert.

The Health Department says the brown water is from re-suspended pollutants from shoreline and inland sources.

In 2004, there was a fatal shark attack at S Turn under turbid water conditions, the Health Department’s Clean Water Branch reported.

If the water is brown stay out, the Health Department said.
