The alleged driver of a pickup truck that crashed and burned near Makua Cave in June 2013 was indicted Tuesday on charges of causing the death of one of his passengers and then fleeing.

An Oahu grand jury returned an indictment charging Kamealoha­nakekaiaulu Wilbur-Delima, 19, with negligent homicide and failing to remain at the scene of the accident to render aid. Zain Lalawai, 16, died in the June 15 crash.

State Circuit Judge Richard Perkins set Wilbur-Delima’s bail at $15,000.

Witnesses told police the truck was weaving and speeding as it traveled north on Farrington Highway, then went off the road, hit a concrete piling and burst into flames.

Police said there were 12 occupants in the pickup — three in the front row of the crew cab, four in the second row and five in the truck bed.

City ambulance crews took three girls, ages 13, 14 and 15, and one boy, age 16, to a hospital in serious condition. Firefighters found Lalawai’s body after they put out the flames.

The Honolulu medical examiner said Lalawai died of head injuries from the crash and that suspected other factors include possible burn injuries.

Wilbur-Delima turned himself in nearly 12 hours later, too late to test his blood for alcohol, police said.

The mother of one of the injured girls is suing Wilbur-Delima, the owner of the truck that he was driving, and the owner of the Wai­anae home where she claims the teenagers were furnished alcohol just before the crash.

At the time of the crash, Wilbur-Delima had five pending traffic violations, three for driving without a valid license and two for speeding, according to traffic court records.
