Arm of driver gets severed in traffic crash
The driver of a Nissan Altima severed his arm in a collision in Hanalei Friday night, Kauai County police reported.
The man was driving south on Kuhio Highway in Hanalei at about 6:20 p.m.
He had his arm out the window when he crossed the centerline and sideswiped a northbound vehicle.
The collision tore off his arm.
The man continued south and stopped at the Hanalei police substation.
He was taken to Wilcox Hospital and then airlifted to Oahu for further treatment.
It was unclear what happened to the arm.
The driver of the other vehicle involved in the collision also stopped at the police substation. He was not injured.
500 gallons of sewage flows onto road
About 500 gallons of wastewater overflowed onto South Kihei Road Saturday due to a mechanical failure at the Kihei No. 5 pump station, Maui County officials said in a statement.
The county Department of Environmental Management said the overflow happened between midnight and 12:30 a.m. between Lipoa Street and Halekuai Street.
Wastewater flowed from three manholes on South Kihei Road into a storm drain that discharges into the pond adjacent to St. Theresa Church, the county said. The sewage reached the pond, but a sand berm at the west end of the pond prevented it from entering the ocean.
The county chemist has taken water samples at the pond and in the ocean for microbiological analysis. Signs have been posted along the pond and at the beach area fronting the pond, but no beach closures have been posted.
