After surrendering a double-digit lead in the second half, the University of Hawaii women’s basketball team fought back from the free-throw line to pull out an 85-76 win over Loyola Marymount on Saturday in Los Angeles.
The Rainbow Wahine (6-4) led by 14 early in the second half, trailed by six with 5:14 left, then went on a 12-0 run to reclaim the lead and held off the Lions (2-8) to improve to 3-0 on the road for the first time since the 2005-06 season.
Morgan Mason, a senior from Los Angeles, had about 30 friends and family members in the crowd at Gersten Pavilion and led five Rainbow Wahine players in double figures with 19 points. She set career highs with 11 free throws made and 14 attempts and the Wahine finished 30-for-36 as a team, also season highs.
"We had great fan support and to be able to pull a win through for ourselves and put on a good show for everybody was a great thing," said Mason, who went 9-for-12 from the line in the final 1:25.
Ashleigh Karaitiana extended her double-digit scoring streak to 10 games by finishing with 12 points as did Destiny King and Dalayna Sampton. Shawlina Segovia added 11 points and led the Wahine with eight rebounds.
UH went the final 4:16 without a field goal but made 17 of 22 free-throw attempts down the stretch to catch and pass LMU.
"Any time you can win on the road its huge," UH coach Laura Beeman said. "We had some foul trouble again and had some really crazy lineups but for some of the youngsters to get the amount of minutes they did and play pretty composed and do the things they did it was really nice to see."
The Wahine will remain in California and face Cal State Bakersfield (7-3) on Tuesday.
Taylor Anderson led LMU with 21 points and Deanna Johnson finished with 19 in the Lions’ fifth straight loss.
