On this festive day, we trim our wreath with hand-drawn ornaments submitted by island youngsters for our annual Keiki Kalikimaka contest. The ornaments are a simple and fun reminder of the joy of Christmas as seen through the eyes of a child.
Judging by their entries, they very clearly are children of Hawaii. Their ornaments reflect the islands’ natural environment (dolphins, sharks, sea turtles, humpback whales, monk seals), its culture (hula, Santa’s voyaging canoe, surfing), and food (musubi, takuan) — even the snowman is wearing shades!
The finalists’ artwork was featured daily in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser starting Nov. 29. (Their names appear at the top right of this page.) Three winners, chosen from among the finalists in a drawing, will receive cash prizes of up to $100.
