Every year comes with a new miracle-working superstar in the beauty world, and while past years have brought us BB cream, vitamin C, green tea and snail mucus, this year what’s new is old.

Retinol has been considered the gold standard of the beauty world for more than 25 years, available only through dermatology professionals due to its unstable nature and side effects that include redness, drying, burning and peeling.

But the promise of banishing acne and reducing wrinkles leaves people wanting access straight off the shelf, and cosmetic manufacturers have complied. They’ve found ways to encapsulate retinol, mimic it and otherwise render it safe and gentle enough for the mass market, so cosmetics junkies can look forward to putting their best face forward in 2015.
