SANTA ANA, Calif. » Preliminary lab results show that a Latin American holiday bread that made dozens of people sick this week in Southern California was laced with a synthetic drug.

The Orange County health agency did not identify the drug in a Friday night statement or say how it may have gotten in the Rosca de Reyes bread. Police will now take over the investigation.

The agency says nearly 40 people complained of dizziness, palpitations and numbness after eating the bread from Cholula’s in Santa Ana.

The sweet bread is traditionally eaten Jan. 6 for the Spanish and Latin American holiday of Kings’ Day, which celebrates the arrival of the Three Wise Men as told in the Bible. The bakery has been ordered closed and phone messages left there weren’t immediately returned.
