Two nights after seeing a fourth-quarter lead evaporate, fourth-ranked Kahuku used a sizable advantage in the paint to power past feisty Roosevelt 52-44 on Friday.
Kahuku rebounded from Wednesday’s overtime loss at Kalaheo led by 6-foot-6 center Hyrum Harris, who scored a team-high 16 points, including a pivotal three-point play late in the game.
After Roosevelt closed to within three with 2:32 left in the fourth quarter, Kahuku coach Alan Akina called a timeout to settle his team.
Harris then drove for a layup while drawing a foul and his free throw gave the Red Raiders breathing room down the stretch.
"I talked to (Harris). I said. ‘Big Man you have to bring this home,’ " Akina said.
Kahuku (2-1) couldn’t close the deal on Wednesday, when Kalaheo rallied from an 11-point deficit in the final four minutes of regulation to force overtime, then pulled away.
The Red Raiders were locked in another tight battle against a smaller Roosevelt team on Friday, but managed to hold off the Rough Riders — who were led by Kevin Foster’s 19 points — in the final minutes.
"After we lost (on Wednesday) we just told each other it’s in the past now we can’t do anything about it, let’s just move on," Harris said.
While Kahuku starts Harris, 6-7 Denhym Brooke and 6-3 Samuta Avea, Roosevelt’s roster tops out with two players at 6-1.
The Rough Riders (2-1) countered with hustle and crisp ball movement early in the game. Guard Valen Inaura found soft spots in the Kahuku zone along the baseline for mid-range jumpers, scoring 12 points in the first half.
But clean looks were hard to come by with Harris looming in the paint and Brooke and Avea, who finished with 15 points, contesting outside jumpers.
"You’re not going to see a bigger team in the state than that team and their length really played a factor," Roosevelt coach Steve Hathaway said. "We did everything we could, but
6-6, 260 against 5-9, 160, it’s going to play in their favor. But I was proud the way we battled."
Foster accounted for all of Roosevelt’s scoring in the fourth quarter, going 7-for-12 from the free-throw line and scoring the Rough Riders’ lone field goal of the period on a tough drive against the Kahuku big men.
"Kevin’s tough to stop," Hathaway said. "I kind of told him, ‘You have to go.’ We were getting too late in the game for him to sit back."
With Kahuku protecting the six-point lead, Foster came up empty on two drives and Harris secured the rebounds. Harris also came up with a steal in the final minute.
"We’re a few weeks away from being polished, but I’m glad we got the win," Akina said.
