Sharks win it with late free throws
Darry Jones Jr. converted the tying and go-ahead free throws with three seconds remaining to lift the Hawaii Pacific men’s basketball team to a 57-56 win over Fresno Pacific on Saturday in a Pacific West Conference game at Moanalua High gym.
A 3-pointer by Madison Higgins put the Sunbirds up 56-55 with eight seconds remaining, but Jones responded after being fouled by Paul Roger and HPU exhaled when Trevon Clayton missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Justin Long had 14 points, and Luke Hager added 13 points and 14 rebounds for HPU (10-4, 5-3 PacWest). Higgins had 16 points for Fresno Pacific (5-9, 1-6).
HPU women improve to 8-0 in PacWest
The Hawaii Pacific women’s basketball team continued its undefeated run through the PacWest Conference with a 77-40 victory Saturday over Fresno Pacific at Moanalua High.
The Sharks (13-2, 8-0 PacWest) led from wire to wire and went up by as many as 40 points late in the second half.
Senior Morganne Comstock scored a career-high 30 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for HPU. Dakota McLarnan led the Sunbirds (2-10, 2-5) with 10 points.
» Forward Whitney Fieldsted went 6-for-6 from the free-throw line and had 18 points and nine rebounds to lead the BYU-Hawaii women to a 68-61 win Saturday against Notre Dame de Namur at Cannon Activities Center.
The Seasiders (8-5, 5-2) outrebounded the Argonauts 41-35. Nanea Woods had 16 points for Notre Dame de Namur (2-13, 0-8).
Rainbow Wahine tennis team struggles
The University of Hawaii women’s tennis team went winless Saturday on Day 3 of the Rainbow Wahine Spring Invitational at the Royal Lahaina Tennis Ranch on Maui.
UH dropped seven singles matches and four doubles matches against No. 7-ranked California.
In a featured singles match, UH’s Cindy Nguyen managed to win six games but fell to No. 5 Maegan Manasse 6-3, 6-3.
Event to honor Polynesian football stars
The Polynesian Football Hall of Fame will honor its second class of inductees with an enshrinement ceremony Jan. 24, starting at 10:30 a.m. at the Polynesian Cultural Center.
Four of the six inductees in the class of 2015, Luther Elliss, Jesse Sapolu, Ray Schoenke and Russ Francis, will take part in the ceremony. The other two inductees, the late Mosi Tatupu and Mark Tuinei, will be represented by their family and friends.
Special guest of honor at the ceremony will be Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota, who also is the recipient of the inaugural Polynesian College Football Player of the Year award.
Tickets for the event are $25 per person and include lunch at the Gateway Restaurant and general admission to the PCC’s island villages. Tickets can be purchased at PolynesianFootballHOF.org.
Vulcans baseball tickets going on sale
Season tickets for the 2015 University of Hawaii Hilo baseball season are on sale Monday through Feb. 28.
This year’s package includes 27 games over 14 dates at Wong Stadium.
The annual alumni game will be held Feb. 7 at Wong Stadium. The home season opens with a five-game series against Menlo College (Calif.) on Feb. 12.

Team Hawaii boxers medal at nationals
Kawelo Alcos took silver and two other Team Hawaii boxers earned bronze medals at the USA Boxing Junior Open-Youth National Championships Friday in Reno, Nev.
Alcos lost in the final of the youth 17-18 age group at 108 pounds. The Waipahu boxer is the first alternate in his division and will head to the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., to train with the youth national team that will compete internationally later this year.
Earning bronze medals were Jazzelle Bobadilla and Wilson Savedra Jr. Bobadilla was fighting at 112 pounds in the youth 17-18 age group and Savedra in the junior 15-16 132-pound weight class.
