UC Irvine hands Hawaii its first loss in volleyball

Tamir Hershko put down a match-high 17 kills en route to Most Outstanding Player honors as No. 8 UC Irvine swept No. 10 Hawaii 27-25, 25-21, 25-19, in the championship match of the Outrigger Resorts Invitational men’s volleyball tournament Sunday at the Stan Sheriff Center. 

Kyle Russell added 11 kills and Zack La Cavera 10 of the Anteaters (3-1, 3-0 ORI).

Siki Zarkovic had 13 kills for the Warriors (3-1, 2-1).

Joining Hershko on the all-tournament team from UCI were La Cavera and setter Michael Saera.

Also named were Hawaii’s Brook Sedore and Zarkovic, Ohio State’s Michael Henchy and Aaron Russell from Penn State.
