Warriors move up to No. 9 in poll
Hawaii moved up a spot to No. 9 in Monday’s AVCA Division I-II Men’s Top 15 volleyball poll.
The Rainbow Warriors (3-1) were tied with Stanford at No. 10 in the preseason rankings.
Defending national champion Loyola-Chicago received 11 first-place votes to trade places with preseason No. 1 Pepperdine.
The Ramblers (2-0) moved up to No. 1 while the Waves (4-0) slipped to No. 2.
UC Santa Barbara (4-0), second to Loyola-Chicago last season, moved up a spot to No. 3. The Gauchos and Warriors open the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation season Friday at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Former No. 3 Penn State dropped to 10th after going 0-2 at last week’s Outrigger Resorts Invitational. UC Irvine (3-1), which swept Hawaii on Sunday for the Outrigger title, moved up two spots to No. 6.
HPU’s Comstock named Player of the Week
After helping Hawaii Pacific string together a three-win week, center Morganne Comstock was rewarded by being named PacWest Player of the Week.
The senior from Seattle averaged 21.7 points, 15.7 rebounds, 3 assists, 2.7 blocks and 2 steals per game last week. She shot 54.3 percent from the field and helped the Sharks remain undefeated in PacWest play at 8-0.
She had 21 points and 20 rebounds, including a program-record-tying 18 defensive rebounds, against Notre Dame de Namur and followed that performance with a career-high 30 points, 13 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocks against Fresno Pacific. Comstock ranks second in the PacWest in scoring (19.6 ppg) and tied for first in rebounding (11.7 rpg).
BYUH’s Friel earns defensive honor
BYU-Hawaii guard Scott Friel netted PacWest Defender of the Week honors after averaging 8 rebounds and 2.7 steals per game in three games for the No. 18 Seasiders last week.
The junior from Riverton, Utah, had 12 rebounds and three steals against Dixie State and followed that effort with nine rebounds and three steals against Notre Dame de Namur. He is tied for fourth in the PacWest in rebounding (7.5 rpg) and steals (1.8 spg).
BYU-Hawaii is tied for fourth place in the conference with a 5-2 mark and is 11-2 overall this season.
