NEW YORK » The U.S. stock market is rising at the open as energy shares climb along with oil prices.

Those gains are tempered by turbulence in global currency markets after the Swiss National Bank’s surprising move to stop keeping its currency artificially cheap.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 37 points, or 0.2 percent, to 17,356 in early trading Friday.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 index gained six points, 0.3 percent, to 1,999. The Nasdaq composite rose 19 points, or 0.4 percent, to 4,590.

Shares of Newfield Exploration rose 2.5 percent. The price of benchmark U.S. crude oil rose 97 cents, or 2 percent, to $47.22 a barrel.
