High surf brings warnings, closures
Big-wave riders can expect surf with 30- to 40-foot faces Wednesday on north and west shores of the Hawaiian Islands, and unseasonally large surf at some south shore beaches.
The National Weather Service issued a high-surf warning at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. It is in effect until 6 p.m. Thursday.
"The swell has a little bit more of a westerly component than usual," Weather Service forecaster Tom Birchard said, which accounts for the high-surf advisory on southern shores.
The Weather Service forecasts 15- to 25-foot surf on west-facing shores.
Birchard said the south shore advisory of 6- to 10-foot surf applies only to those areas exposed to this type of wave, typically near Diamond Head, Portlock and Ala Moana.
The Department of Land and Natural Resources closed the Keawaula beach section of Kaena Point State Park on Tuesday afternoon due to high surf.
The beach will remain closed Tuesday night to Wednesday until high surf subsides and lifeguards give the all-clear. State parks officials will assess surf conditions on Hawaii island Wednesday morning to determine whether any of its beach parks should be closed for safety concerns.
Missing woman located and is OK, Maui police say

Police thanked the public for their assistance in locating Sharp.
County offers to email property assessments
Maui County officials say real property owners have the option of receiving 2015 real property assessment notices via email.
The deadline to register is Feb. 18.
To go paperless, property owners may visit the website listed on last year’s assessment notice card and enter the code that appears on the card, officials said in a news release issued Tuesday. After registration is completed, assessment notices will be sent by way of email.

Closure of part of Kahuna Road set for next week
A portion of Kahuna Road near the Akulikuli Stream Bridge will be closed from Monday to Jan. 28, 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., Kauai County officials said.
The closure will allow contractor Imua Landscaping Co. to cut and remove a large albizia tree along the county right-of-way.
While the work is underway, motorists must use alternate routes.
Area residents wanting to access the upper portion of Kahuna Road will be detoured around the work area on Kawaihau Road over the Kapahi Bridge. There is a 3-ton weight limit on that bridge.
Anyone with questions may call Tal Adelson with Imua Landscaping at 917-414-9927 or Scott Suga with the Department of Public Works, 241-4844.
