Puuhale event will promote road safety
Honolulu police, along with members of community groups, will wave signs in front of Puuhale Elementary School, 345 Puuhale Road, at about 7:30 a.m. Friday, urging safety awareness for pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists.
At 8 a.m. the group will hold a memorial for Elizabeth Malland, a homeless pedestrian who died after being struck by a Jeep Compass on Nimitz Highway near Kalihi Street on Jan. 2. Malland was walking against the light and was not in a marked crosswalk, police said.
There will be a discussion by those present on possible solutions that could prevent future fatalities in this area.
Joining the police will be representatives of Puuhale Elementary, City Councilman Joey Manahan’s office, the Institute for Human Services and the Hawaii Bicycling League.

Nonprofit loses county contract
KAILUA-KONA >> A Big Island recycling nonprofit whose leadership has spoken out against the county mayor’s waste-incineration plans has lost a long-held recycling education contract.
Mayor Billy Kenoi says canceling the contract with Recycle Hawaii wasn’t politically motivated. Kenoi says the county is changing how it promotes recycling.
West Hawaii Today reported Thursday that Recycle Hawaii has held the $100,000 yearly contract for more than a decade.
The organization’s executive director, Paul Buklarewicz, says the last contract expired in June and that a new contract had been negotiated with the Department of Environmental Management.
Buklarewicz says the organization had been continuing recycling education programs using other funds until it was informed in a letter last week that the contract would not be renewed.
Three finalists are in the running for the incinerator project.
Man arrested in shooting
Maui police Tuesday arrested a 20-year-old Kula man who allegedly fired what appeared to be a pistol at a vehicle.
The pistol was later discovered to be a BB gun, police said.
Police said a driver reported that a man in a vehicle shot at the victim’s vehicle at about 7 p.m. Tuesday at Honoapiilani Highway and North Kihei Road.
The man who allegedly fired the BB gun left the area, police said, but he was later found and met officers at the Kihei Police Station. He was arrested on suspicion of first-degree terroristic threatening and released pending further investigation. No injuries or damage were reported.
