Waialua Elementary School was in lockdown Thursday morning.

Classes resumed at Waialua Elementary School Thursday for 580 students after police captured a suspected car thief near the school.

Police arrested a 38-year-old man on suspicion of car theft just before 8:20 a.m. near the school after a search involving the SWAT team, police dogs, and Waialua patrol officers.

The search for the suspect started in the Waialua area before classes at the campus began at 7:55 a.m., Department of Education officials said.

Children who arrived at school were kept in the cafeteria until teachers picked them up and escorted them to their classrooms.

The school was placed in lockdown until the police issued an all-clear following the arrest..
