Waianae coach Matsumoto steps down
Daniel Matsumoto, who spent the last 15 years as Waianae’s head football coach, is retiring according to athletic director Glenn Tokunaga.
Matsumoto went 92-70 in 15 seasons with the Seariders and guided them to a state final in 2010, losing 36-13 to a Marcus Mariota-led Saint Louis team.
Matsumoto went 11-2 in his first season in 2000 but failed to win an OIA title in his tenure. The Seariders’ last OIA championship came in 1997.
The Seariders were 5-4 this past season, losing to Farrington in the OIA quarterfinals.
Trapasso, Gusman to headline luncheon
University of Hawaii baseball coach Mike Trapasso and Saint Louis baseball coach George Gusman will be the featured speakers at the next Downtown Athletic Club Hawaii luncheon on Tuesday at the Hukilau restaurant.
Doors will open at 11:30 a.m. and the program will start at noon. Admission is $30 and includes a buffet lunch. Tickets can be purchased at Eventbrite.com.
HPU softball 4th, baseball 5th
The Hawaii Pacific University softball team was picked to finish fourth in the Pacific West Conference preseason poll announced Thursday.
Hawaii Hilo was ranked sixth, Chaminade seventh and BYU-Hawaii 10th. UH-Hilo first baseman Emily Greene and HPU outfielder Keila Elderts were named to the All-PWC preseason team.
» HPU was ranked fifth in the baseball preseason, with senior Derek Nakasato and junior Tyler Tokunaga earning all-conference preseason honors. UH-Hilo was picked to finish seventh.
UH men’s tennis team falls in Washington
The University of Hawaii men’s tennis team managed just one doubles victory Thursday in a 7-0 loss to No. 63-ranked Washington in Seattle.
Hawaii’s Nils Schuhmann and Carter Lam downed Emmett Egger and Jeff Hawke, 6-4 in the first doubles match, but the Huskies (4-0) swept the next two doubles matches and all six singles matches.
Chaminade, BYU-Hawaii women lose
Darsha Burnside had 16 points and 24 rebounds as California Baptist beat host Chaminade 68-59. Lilia Maio scored 14 points for the Silverswords (3-12, 3-8 PacWest). The Lancers are 16-3, 9-2.
» Miriam Zabinsky scored 25 points as visiting Azusa Pacific defeated Brigham Young-Hawaii 68-46. Brydgette Tatupu-Leopoldo had 11 points for the Seasiders (12-6, 9-3 PacWest). The Cougars improved to 12-7, 8-4.
Chaminade, BYU-Hawaii men win
Pablo Coro scored 23 points and Daniel Berger added 19 as host BYU-Hawaii beat Azusa Pacific 92-78. The Seasiders improved to 16-2 and 10-2 PacWest.
» Kuany Kuany and Frankie Eteuati each scored 14 points as host Chaminade edged Cal Baptist 79-77. The Silverswords improved to 8-9 and 5-6.
Top seed Kudla loses in Lahaina
Zimbabwe’s Takanyi Garanganga, a qualifier, beat No. 1 seed Dennis Kudla of the United States 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the second round of the Royal Lahaina Challenger tennis tournament on Thursday at the Royal Lahina Resort.
Wild-card Stefan Kozlov of the U.S. beat fellow American and No. 3 seed Mitchell Russell 7-6 (2), 6-3.
No. 2 seed Bradley Klahn of the U.S. beat Denmark’s Frederik Nielsen 6-3, 6-4.
