Kailua man stole from nonprofit, indictment alleges
The former executive director of a nonprofit organization that provided services to the disabled was indicted by a federal grand jury Wednesday on theft charges alleging he embezzled $179,222, the FBI said Friday.
Mitchell J.W. Keawe Jr., 50, of Kailua was executive director of the Hawaii Centers for Independent Living, a now-defunct nonprofit that served the disabled on Oahu, Maui, Molokai, Hawaii island, Kauai and Guam, according to the FBI.
Keawe, also known as Kimo Keawe, was charged with three counts of theft from an organization receiving federal funds. The organization was primarily funded with grants from the U.S. Department of Education, the FBI said.
Keawe is accused of embezzling $179,222 from Oct. 4, 2011, through Dec. 20, 2013, and is scheduled to appear in federal court in Honolulu on Feb. 12. He has not been arrested, the FBI said.
The maximum penalty for the charges is 10 years in prison per count.
Seattle man, 82, dies at beach in Kihei, Maui
Maui authorities are investigating the death of an 82-year-old Seattle visitor who died at Polo Beach in Kihei on Thursday.
Walter Sinsheimer was found unresponsive in the ocean off the beach at 4:15 p.m. and taken to shore, where cardiopulmonary resuscitation efforts failed to revive him.
An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.
Boy charged with robbing younger child
A 13-year-old boy was charged Thursday with second-degree robbery of an 11-year-old boy in Kalihi.
Police said the teen allegedly used physical force to rob the boy of his property at 5:40 p.m. Wednesday.
He allegedly hit the boy with the item taken, causing substantial injury, police said.
Officers arrived at the scene and arrested the teen on suspicion of first-degree robbery. A petition was filed in Family Court, and he was charged with the lesser crime of second-degree robbery.
Empty kayak adrift off Oahu generates search
Rescuers on Friday were searching for a possible missing person off of Barbers Point after finding a kayak adrift.
The Coast Guard said it was searching in an area approximately 15 miles south of Barbers Point. The kayak, a 12-foot green Islander, was first spotted by a Coast Guard air crew that called in a report at 11:33 a.m.
There are no missing persons or distress reports in the area, the Coast Guard said.
Anyone with information that might help identify the owner of the kayak is asked to contact the Coast Guard Sector Honolulu Command Center at 842-2600.
