Gov. David Ige, left, was the guest of honor when Australian Consul-General Jeff Robinson celebrated Australia Day with a late-afternoon party for island community leaders Monday at his East Honolulu residence. Robinson told the crowd that Duke Kahanamoku’s visit “Down Under” a century ago forged important cultural ties between Australia and Hawaii. The official national day commemorates the arrival of the first English settlers on Jan. 26, 1788.
