Kahekili Highway reopened after fiery small bus-car crash

Two men and a woman were seriously injured after a small converted school bus used to transport agricultural equipment went up in flames following a head-on collision with a sedan in Kaneohe.

City Emergency Medical Services said a 28-year-old man, driver of the sedan, and a 50-year-old man, the bus driver, and his passenger, a 50-year-old woman, were transported to a hospital in serious condition.

Fire Capt. David Jenkins said the older man and woman were inside the bus, which was being used to transport farm equipment.

The bus was old and contained fuel and equipment for agricultural purposes, Jenkins said.

The man and woman, and the man driving the sedan, got out of their vehicles before the bus was engulfed in flames and destroyed.

The Fire Department got the call at 3:04 p.m. Firefighters arrived at 3:12 p.m., and the fire was extinguished by 3:17 p.m.

Police closed the highway in both directions between Haiku Road and Hui Iwa Street and reopened it less than an hour later.
