Pack up edibles in eco-friendly, affordable style
Lucky for us, Shannon Woodruff of Phoenix, who goes by the moniker Hustle Mama, stays up nights thinking of new ways to sew fabric. She has come up with several winning products that make it easy to be more environmentally responsible. Her reusable, fold-top snack and sandwich bags, made of colorful cotton fabric, are washer- and dishwasher-safe and have moisture-resistant, food-safe nylon liners. She also makes 12-inch square wraps that fold up envelope style and are secured with fabric fasteners — simple yet ingenious. Prices range from $4 to $8, with sets available. Alcohol adds a kick to delicious ginger drink
Ginger beer with alcohol is new to Hawaii, but it has been enjoyed in Scotland since 1801. Crabbie’s Original Alcoholic Ginger Beer tastes like the high-quality ginger ale sold at specialty grocery stores and some restaurants. The difference is it has alcohol: 4.8 percent, to be exact. Its great taste and nice kick make for real refreshment. It’s imported from Scotland, and the brewer suggests you drink it on the rocks with a twist of lemon or lime. The brew can be found at Bonzer Front in Haleiwa, Ewa Pantry, The Liquor Collection in Ward Warehouse, Tamura’s and Whole Foods Market for $5.99 to $7.99 a pint bottle.

Wee tabs keep earrings in check
If you’re like me, you toss your earrings into a dish, jewelry box or drawer at the end of the day, and the next morning you’re rummaging through the tangled mess of hoops, studs and wires, getting annoyed because you can’t find a matching pair. It’s not a good situation for your jewelry or your state of mind, especially if you’re in a hurry.
Tina Dimitrion of Hawaii Kai provides the simplest of solutions with her polyurethane Pairings, which have small holes that grip earring posts and hooks, keeping them organized in your jewelry keeper, luggage or gym bag. A pretty little pouch with nine pieces is $9.95 at Riches at Kahala Mall and Downtown Gifthings at Ward Warehouse. Hawaii residents get free shipping when ordering at www.thepairingscompany.com; for everyone else, shipping is free through Feb. 28.

Whole-wheat loaf cuts sugar, not taste
My New Year’s resolution was to eat less processed sugar, but it’s everywhere in things you wouldn’t expect, even in many "healthier" whole-wheat breads. The best sugar-free bread I’ve found is Alvarado Street Bakery’s Sprouted Whole Wheat Bread, made with organic ingredients. It has a slight moistness that is missing from other no-sugar-added breads, with a nice texture — firm and chewy but not tough. The bread does list raisins and dates among its ingredients, so while it’s not completely sweetener-free, at least it’s not the much-maligned processed stuff. Find Alvarado’s bread at Whole Foods and Safeway for $5.99 for a 24-ounce loaf.

Make your own cup of Vietnamese coffee
I love Vietnamese coffee — all that sweetened condensed milk and espresso goodness — and with this Vietnamese coffee filter set, I can make it at home. It comes with a stainless-steel brewing chamber, screw-on press and lid. Update International’s single-serving version is $6 on amazon.com (search "Vietnamese coffee filter set") or find it locally at Oahu Market in Chinatown for about $5. It takes roughly five minutes to brew a cup, so you’ll want to buy two or you’ll be waiting for your cup while watching your friend sip away.
