Swimmer drowns at Wailuku River park
A Puna swimmer apparently drowned Thursday at Boiling Pots in Wailuku River State Park.
Hawaii Fire Department personnel were called for help at 5:13 p.m. and found a man submerged in water and unresponsive. Attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.
Officials said witnesses saw the man, 33, struggling after swimming in an area under a waterfall.
He was taken to Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
His identity is being withheld pending positive identification and notification of family.
An autopsy has been ordered to determine the cause of death.
Jogger hit by pickup is severely injured
A pickup truck hit and critically injured a woman jogging in a marked crosswalk in Mililani on Thursday night.
Police said the accident happened at 7:09 p.m. at Meheula Parkway and Kuahelani Avenue, about a block from Makaunulau Community Park.
The 2012 Chevrolet pickup truck, driven by a 72-year-old man, was making a left turn onto Kuahelani Avenue from the southbound lanes of Meheula Parkway when the pickup struck the jogger, police said.
Paramedics took a woman in her 30s to the Queen’s Medical Center in critical condition.
The accident occurred in clear weather.
Man arrested in attempt to strike officer
Police arrested an 18-year-old Kalihi man for allegedly trying to hit a police officer with a weapon in Makiki early Friday morning.
Officers were responding to an argument call when the man approached the 33-year-old male officer aggressively and allegedly tried to strike him with a weapon, police said.
Police would not specify what type of weapon was used.
The attack occurred at 2:45 a.m., police said.
Responding officers assisted and arrested the man on suspicion of first-degree attempted murder.
