Fund to help family of jogger hit by truck
A memorial fund has been created to help support the family of Shari Naomi Afuso, a 49-year-old Mililani woman who died Friday, a day after she was struck by a pickup truck while jogging in a crosswalk at Meheula Parkway and Kuahelani Avenue.
Afuso was a courtroom manager for federal Magistrate Judge Kevin Chang. She and her husband, Mark, had celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary a few days before the accident.
The fund was established to support Mark Afuso and the couple’s two teenage children, Christopher and Kerstyn.
By late Tuesday afternoon, donations had reached an estimated $44,000, much of it from law firms, attorneys and judges. The fund’s goal is $50,000.
Donations to the Shari Afuso Memorial Fund are being taken online at bit.ly/1AUrN9E.
Woman pleads no contest over fatal car crash
A 20-year-old woman will be sentenced May 6 after pleading no contest to manslaughter and first-degree negligent injury charges stemming from a fatal 2011 crash on Kauai.
A 16-year-old girl was killed when Brittney L. Kane lost control of her car on Kuhio Highway north of the Wailua Golf Course entrance.
Kane made the plea Monday before Kauai Circuit Judge Kathleen Watanabe, according to a Kauai County news release.
Kane was 16 at the time of the crash, but the Family Court waived jurisdiction and she was to be tried as an adult.
Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Melinda K. Mendes said Kane was speeding and racing in a red 1997 Pontiac Grand Am sedan on Sept. 11, 2011, while under the influence of alcohol.
Kane veered off the road and the vehicle struck a tree, Mendes said.
Nahele Kapua, a passenger in Kane’s car, was killed. Kane and another passenger, a 15-year-old girl, were injured.
According to the news release, Kane had a blood-alcohol content of 0.153, well above the 0.08 legal threshold for drunken driving.
