Warriors name offensive, defensive coaches
Former Southern Methodist interim head coach Tom Mason and Idaho State offensive coordinator Don Bailey have reached one-year agreements to run the University of Hawaii’s defense and offense, respectively.
UH still is organizing roles on the coaching staff, and official titles have not been finalized.
Mason and Bailey are expected to join the Warriors on March 1, a month ahead of the opening of UH’s spring practice.
Mason, who also served as SMU’s defensive coordinator, succeeds Kevin Clune, who resigned last month to run Utah State’s defense. Mason had taken over SMU when June Jones resigned as the Mustangs’ head coach the past September.
Although the Mustangs’ 3-4 defense is similar to Clune’s schemes, the Warriors are expected use both a 3-4 and 4-3 as base fronts. Mason is expected to help coach the UH defensive backs.
Bailey fills one of the two coaching positions vacated with the departures of Daronte’ Jones, who was UH’s associate head coach in charge of defensive backs, and special teams coordinator Chris Demarest. Jones joined Wisconsin’s staff, and Demarest apparently joined Morgan State’s staff.

The offensive staff will create the game plan jointly, but Bailey will have play-calling duties.
UH is close to completing the staff.
