Nguyen earns Big West tennis honor
Two singles victories on the road earned Cindy Nguyen Big West tennis Athlete of the Week honors on Wednesday.
The sophomore from Long Beach, Calif., rallied from a set down to help the Rainbow Wahine to a victory over San Diego to open their road trip on Feb. 12. Nguyen outlasted Marta Stojanovic 3-6, 7-5, 7-5 at No. 1 singles with her match providing the clinching point in UH’s 4-3 win.
In Nguyen’s return to her hometown, she knocked off Long Beach State’s Maeva Razakasoa, the 99th-ranked player in the nation, 6-3, 7-5 last Saturday in UH’s 5-2 loss to the 49ers.
The Rainbow Wahine (3-3, 1-1 Big West) enter the week ranked 53rd in the country and return to UH Tennis Complex on Saturday for a Big West match against UC Irvine (5-2, 1-0). Matches start at 11 a.m.
