UH’s Alkhaldi sets record at MPSF meet
University of Hawaii senior Jasmine Alkhaldi retained her title in the women’s 50-yard freestyle in record time at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Swimming and Diving Championships on Thursday at East Los Angeles College.
Alkhaldi won the event in 22.49 seconds, breaking the previous meet record of 22.58 set in 2011.
Alkhaldi also helped the Rainbow Wahine win the 200 freestyle relay in 1:32.24. She swam the first leg and was followed by Franziska Weidner, Taylor Thorsen and Morgan Mark.
Victor Goicoechea also successfully defended his title in the men’s 500 freestyle in 4:18.22.
The Rainbow Warriors team of Karl-Richard Hennebach, Riley Hagan, Yuri Samouilich and Alistair Maclean made it a UH sweep of the 200 free relay in finishing at 1:20.63.
UH also swept the 3-meter diving competitions with Amund Gismervik winning his second straight men’s title and Lauren Hall and Aimee Harrison finishing 1-2 in the women’s standings.
UH leads the women’s standings with 293 points, 101 ahead of UCSB. UH trails UCSB in the men’s standings with 252 points, 17.5 behind the Gauchos.
The MPSF championsips run through Saturday.
UH men ninth at John Burns Intercollegiate
The University of Hawaii men’s golf team shot an 18-over-par 306 and dropped to ninth after Thursday’s second round of the John Burns Intercollegiate at Wailua Golf Course on Kauai.
The Rainbow Warriors are at 599 in the 17-team tournament. California is atop the standings at 3-under 573.
Hawaii Hilo (610) is 14th, UH Manoa B (624) is 16th and Brigham Young-Hawaii (631) is 17th.
New Mexico’s Andrej Bevins (68) and Arizona’s George Cunningham (70) are tied for the lead at 6-under 138.
UH’s top golfer is SkyeInakoshi, who is tied for 17th at 147.
