UH women first, men third in MPSF meet
The University of Hawaii men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams concluded the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships on Saturday afternoon at East Los Angeles College, with the Rainbow Wahine winning their first-ever title, while the men placed third.
The UH women finished with a total of 747 points, and the men had 721 points.
Jasmine Alkhaldi led the Rainbow Wahine, taking gold in the 50 free and 200 free earlier this week, while setting meet records in both. On Saturday she won another gold in the 50 free, setting another MPSF record with a time of 48.87. The senior also swam in the 200 freestyle relay, 200 medley relay and 800 freestyle relay, leading the women to first place in all three.
For the Rainbow Warriors, Yuri Samouilich finished third in the men’s 100 free with a time of 44.53. Karl-Richard Hennebach also competed in the championship finals, taking sixth (45.09).
Hawaii also made a big splash in post-meet awards. Diving coaches Mike Brown and Anita Rossing were named women’s co-coaches of the meet for the third straight year. Amund Gismervik and Aimee Harrison were named men’s and women’s divers of the meet; Alkhadi was named swimmer of the meet; Kira Webster freshman of the meet; and Victor Wales the swim coach of the meet.

Chaminade women top team-wins mark
Mathematically eliminated from the Pacific West Conference tournament, the Chaminade women’s basketball team played with a sense of purpose Saturday in a 91-52 rout of Holy Names at McCabe Gym.
The Silverswords improved to 7-15 overall, 7-11 in the PacWest, breaking the program mark for wins in a season, set during the team’s inaugural 2006-07 season. The 39-point margin of victory was also the largest in program history.
Sophomore forward Lilia Maio led Chaminade with a career-high 22 points on 9-for-16 shooting, while senior guard Katie Buskey finished with 20 points.
Garysha Youngblood led Holy Names (2-23, 1-16) with 14 points and nine boards.
