Ocean Safety lifeguards rescued two kayakers in distress near the Mokulua Islands on Tuesday afternoon.

The kayakers were 400 yards offshore from Lanikai, fronting the islands, said Shayne Enright, Emergency Services Department spokeswoman.

The lifeguards responded at about 3:10 p.m., and using a rescue watercraft they brought a 62-year-old man to the Kailua Beach Park boat ramp. One lifeguard stayed with the second kayaker.

Emergency Medical Services took over treatment of the patient, a California visitor, and transported him to an area hospital in serious condition due to exhaustion.

Good Samaritan kayakers brought the second kayaker, who did not need medical help, to shore.

Enright noted that conditions were windy at the time of the rescue.
