Search turns up guns and crystal meth
Hawaii County police have charged a 31-year-old man with multiple drug and firearm charges following a search of the man’s home in Hilo on Friday.
Police executing a search warrant for the Waiakea Uka home recovered 7.75 pounds of crystal methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia, an unregistered handgun, two unregistered rifles and $5,700 in cash, police said.
Richard Frias of Mountain View was charged Saturday with first-degree meth trafficking, possession of drug paraphernalia and three weapon offenses. His aggregate bail was set at $1 million.
Two other men were also arrested at the scene.
Christopher Mae, 32, of Hilo was charged with contempt of court for an unrelated bench warrant and released Sunday after posting $1,500 bail.
The other suspect, a 35-year-old Hilo man, was released pending further investigation.
Blaze ruins house on Hawaii island
Fire destroyed a one-story home Sunday in Pahoa.
The loss was estimated at $130,000.
When Hawaii island firefighters arrived at the home on Ahi Street at 9:54 p.m., the structure was engulfed in flames, fire officials said. The fire was extinguished at 11:30 p.m.
Victim assaulted with tire iron in Kapahulu
A 21-year-old Palolo man was in custody after he allegedly hit another man on the head with a tire iron early Sunday morning in Kapahulu. Police said two groups of men argued at about 2:20 a.m. near a Kapahulu bar when the dispute escalated.
Officers arrested the suspect on suspicion of second-degree assault. The police report did not include the nature of injuries to the victim.
