Morales, Hitchcock power Rainbow Wahine past Oregon State

Heather Morales’ three-run home run in the first inning and Brittany Hitchcock’s complete-game performance propelled the University of Hawaii softball team to its first victory over a Pac-12 opponent this season with a 4-1 win over Oregon State on Friday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Morales, who hit a grand slam against Longwood on Thursday, gave Hitchcock an early lead with her blast to left field with one out in the bottom of the first inning and UH (14-8) extended its winning streak to five while snapping Oregon State’s eight-game run.

Hitchcock worked out of trouble in the first three innings, allowing one run while stranding seven OSU runners on base. She held OSU to one hit over the final four innings and the game ended with UH second baseman Tayana Mata’s diving stop and flip to shortstop Sarina Jaramillo for a force out at second.

Hitchcock finished with six strikeouts and two walks in her third complete game of the season and improved to 6-3.

Kapolei graduate Mikela Manewa went 2-for-3 and drove in Oregon State’s run with a single in the top of the second inning.

The Outrigger Resorts Spring Fling Tournament continues Saturday with UH scheduled to face Utah (16-5) at 4 p.m.
