Toys catch fire in boys’ attempt to do magic trick
Two children playing with matches in an attempt to perform a magic trick started a small fire in an Aiea apartment Saturday.
A Honolulu Fire Department spokesman said two boys, ages 7 and 10, were trying to perform a magic trick when a box of toys caught fire.
Firefighters dispatched to the scene saw smoke coming from a second-floor apartment at 99-189 Puakala St. after the fire was reported at about 11:02 a.m.
A neighbor was able to put out the fire with an extinguisher by the time firefighters arrived at 11:06 a.m.
There was no damage to the apartment or contents, except for the box of toys.
Sighting by copter helps halt spread of Schofield blaze
The Honolulu Fire Department helicopter, returning to the airport from Kahuku, spotted a brush fire on the East Range at Schofield Barracks near Leilehua High School at about 6:50 p.m. Saturday.
Six HFD units responded, along with federal firefighters.
Fire Department spokesman Kevin Mokulehua said the helicopter remained in the area and guided trucks to the fire scene.
Firefighters brought the fire under control at 8:02 p.m.
There was no estimate on the size of the brush fire, which did not threaten any buildings.
