Crews to work on Waialae Avenue cable break through weekend

Hawaiian Telcom crews are expected to work through the weekend to repair an underground cable that was damaged during a water main break Monday, affecting 130 business and residential customers in Kaimuki.

One lane of Koko Head-bound traffic on Waialae Avenue, between 6th and 7th avenues, will remain closed while the crews work on the cable.

Board of Water Supply crews completed repairs on a broken 12-inch water main and reopened Waialae Avenue after repaving the road Wednesday morning.

Hawaiian Telcom crews spent Wednesday clearing out and removing debris from a damaged manhole at the intersection of Waialae and 7th avenues. In addition to extensive damage to the manhole, the water main break also damaged a cable and cable ducts in the immediate area. Technicians are now working to splice wires in place at 8,400 points, a Hawaiian Telcom spokeswoman said.

Classes resumed Thursday at St. Patrick School, 3320 Harding Ave., which has been closed since Tuesday because of the water main break.
