Man shot by police charged with attempted assault of officer

The sedan driven by a man shot by police Tuesday afternoon sat near Kaneohe Elementary School.

Prosecutors filed charges against  a 20-year-old McCully man, who remains hospitalized with a gun shot wound to his stomach.

An officer shot William Andres during a police chase that began in Waimanalo and ended in a Kaneohe neighborhood Tuesday afternoon involving an allegedly stolen car.

Andres is charged with attempted first-degree assault, first-degree terroristic threatening, unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle, resisting an order to stop a motor vehicle, second-degree assault on a law enforcement officer and accidents involving a vehicle or property. His bail is set at $50,000.

City prosecutors prepared warrants Thursday to take Andres into custody once he is released from the hospital.

Police initially arrested Andres on suspicion of  first-degree attempted murder for allegedly trying to run over an officer. That  charged was reclassified to first-degree attempted assault.

The terroristic threatening charge stems from his actions after police approached him and ordered him to turn off the engine of the car.

Police said Andres was sitting in a stolen car near Wai-ma-nalo District Park just before 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. When officers approached, Andres suddenly started up the car and allegedly hit one officer in the leg. That officer fired several shots at the driver, striking the suspect once, police said.

Andres then fled in the stolen White Honda. Officers pursued him briefly until he headed toward Kaneohe, police said.

Andres abandoned the Honda at the intersection of Ualani Place and Kame-ha-meha Highway near Kaneohe Elementary School, after hitting another car

Police caught Andres in the yard of a home at Kuu Home Place.

Paramedics treated Andres and took him in critical condition to the Queen’s Medical Center, where he was still hospitalized Friday.

Police said the officer with the leg injury was taken to Castle Medical Center and treated.

The other officer’s injuries were not life threatening.

Andres has four felony convictions, including burglary and car theft, and two misdemean convictions for theft and  carrying a deadly weapon.

Two schools, Kaneohe and Maunawili elementary, were placed on lockdown during the incident Tuesday.
