Driver indicted in fatal December crash
A former Koloa man was indicted Wednesday by a Kauai grand jury on manslaughter and other charges stemming from a December traffic crash that caused the death of a Kekaha man.
Joseph Michael Frye, 36, was also charged with second-degree negligent homicide, second-degree reckless endangering and reckless driving. Frye is currently wanted on a bench warrant with bail set at $100,000.
At about 10 a.m. Dec. 6, Frye was driving east on Kaumualii Highway in a truck and tried to overtake a Ford Mustang, cutting in from the eastbound shoulder, a Kauai County news release said. The truck clipped the front end of the Mustang, causing the truck to cross the centerline and broadside a Chevy sedan driven by Jonathan Cruz, 56.He was pronounced dead at Wilcox Hospital.
Homeless man charged in hatchet attack
Prosecutors charged a 64-year-old homeless man in a hatchet attack on two men in Chinatown early Thursday morning.
Norman Coldron is charged with two counts of second-degree assault and a probation violation. His bail was set at $20,000.
The incident occurred on Nuuanu Avenue at 2 a.m. Thursday when the suspect struck two men with an hatchet during an argument. Paramedics treated a 52-year-old man for cuts to an arm and took him to the hospital in stable condition. The other victim, a 54-year-old man, did not need medical treatment, police said.
2 men are charged with theft, forgery after home burglary
Hawaii County police have charged two men in connection with a burglary of a Hawaiian Paradise Park residence Monday.
The victim, a 35-year-old man, told police that a racing bicycle, electronics, checks and jewelry were taken from his home.
The following day, police arrested Bruce Rogee, 19, of Hilo for allegedly attempting to cash one of the victim’s checks at a bank in Hilo. Also arrested was 23-year-old Taylor Kalawe of Keaau.
A subsequent search of Kalawe’s home and a vehicle turned up a wedding ring and other items taken in the burglary, police said.
Kalawe was charged Thursday with second-degree theft, attempted second-degree theft and forgery, as well as contempt of court for an unrelated case. His bail was set at $30,150.
Rogee was charged with second-degree forgery, second-degree theft and two counts of unauthorized possession of confidential personal information. His bail was set at $8,000.
Police are asking the public’s assistance in locating the stolen bicycle, which is described as a 2012 Orbea Triathlon bicycle with a 2014 Ironman race sticker (No. 1565). Anyone with information about the burglary or the location of the bicycle is asked to call 935-3311.
