Oahu traffic accidents kill 1 and injure 2
One driver died and two other motorists were in critical condition in separate accidents Sunday.
An 88-year-old Kaneohe woman died after her car sideswiped another vehicle and crashed on Waikalua Road in Kaneohe on Sunday afternoon.
The crash occurred at about 4:30 p.m. near the Kaneohe police station.
According to witnesses, the woman was slumped over her steering wheel and appeared to be unconscious at the time of the collision with the other car.
She was transported in critical condition to Castle Medical Center, where she later died. The driver of the other vehicle, a 29-year-old Waipahu woman, was not injured.
Police closed Waikalua Road from Kamehameha Highway for more than two hours for a traffic investigation.
Earlier, a 22-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman were critically injured when their stalled vehicle was struck from behind by another vehicle on the H-3 freeway.
According to police, the two were in a Camaro that had stalled in the left eastbound lane of the highway Sunday morning. The vehicle was struck by a truck driven by a 44-year-old man.
The two injured people, both in critical condition, were transported by Emergency Medical Services to a local trauma center. The truck driver refused treatment at the scene.
Motorcyclist is hurt in collision with car
A 28-year-old man was injured Sunday afternoon when the motorcycle he was operating collided with a car that turned in front of him at the intersection of Bougainville Drive and Lawehana Street.
The incident happened at about 12:38 a.m.
Paramedics transported the man in serious condition to a hospital.
Assault on police officer lands man in jail
A 60-year-old man was charged Saturday with assaulting a police officer who approached him about an open campfire near Honolulu Airport.
The man, who was booked under the name John Doe, was charged with first-degree assault of a law enforcement officer. His bail was set at $20,000.
Police said the man became angry and struck the officer with a dangerous instrument at about 1 a.m. Friday.
He was arrested on suspicion of assault and fourth-degree arson near the intersection of Rodgers Boulevard and Nimitz Highway.
Police said the arson case was dropped.
