A cooking fire that moved quickly through a single-family residence in Manoa destroyed the structure and injured one man, a fire official said.
Fire Battalion Chief Geoffrey Chang said 35 firefighters in nine companies responded to the 5:10 p.m. alarm at 3059 Woolsey Place and found the second floor engulfed in flames.
The fire was extinguished at 5:55 p.m.
He said four people in their 30s lived in the rental home and the American Red Cross was called to assist with shelter.
He said one man was home and got distracted in another room while cooking. When he heard popping in the kitchen, he went back and found the kitchen on fire.
"He was going to attempt to put it out, but it was too big so he just ran out of the house," Chang said. "We found him across the street."
The man declined comment, but told another man at the scene that he was heating oil.
Chang said the man suffered light burns to his face and was treated by paramedics at the scene.
Witnesses described a dramatic blaze.
"The flames were shooting out the top," said Julie Yokota, who lives below Woolsey Place.
Black smoke billowed into the sky and flames quickly engulfed the upper story of the house. A garage is on the first floor of the hillside home.
"The whole house was … you could see flames," she said. "It was terrible."
Fire officials did not have a damage estimate but said the house was a total loss.
