A 56-year-old surfer who died Wednesday after being pulled from the water at Kewalo Basin has been identified as Roy Digma, of Ewa Beach.

The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office identified Digma on Thursday and said an autopsy has not yet been conducted.

Police said Digma became unresponsive while surfing and was taken to a hospital where he died about 9:45 a.m.

Bystanders said Digma was still attached to his board when other surfers found him floating in the water and tried to revive him on his board while bringing him back to shore.

Acquaintances of Digma said he was known as “Smiley” because he was quiet and smiled often and was regularly seen in the morning surfing at Kewalos at a spot known as Straight Outs.
