Hawaii opens Big West play with 2-0 loss to UC Irvine

Elliot Surrey tossed a six-hit shutout in UC Irvine’s 2-0 victory over Hawaii on Friday night at Anteater Ballpark in Irvine, Calif.

Cameron Bishop’s two-out double in the first scored Mikey Duarte, who led off the game with a four-pitch walk. It turned out to be enough offense for the Anteaters (12-10, 1-0), who have won all seven conference games against Hawaii (9-17, 0-1) since the Rainbow Warriors joined the conference.

Marcus Doi had three of Hawaii’s six hits. UH had runners on first and second with nobody out in the fourth inning when Kaeo Aliviado was picked off at second by catcher Jerry McClanahan. Doi’s two-out single in the inning would have scored a runner from second, but instead, it’s the 18th loss in the last 23 Big West conference games for Hawaii.

L.J. Brewster (3-3) gave up both of his runs on leadoff walks. The Anteaters added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth when Ryan Cooper bunted home Kris Paulino, who drew one of three walks issued by Brewster.

Brewster allowed seven hits and struck out three.

Surrey (3-2) struck out the side in the ninth to finish with seven for the game. He walked one.

The series continues Saturday at 10 a.m.
