Saturday’s Big West softball doubleheader between Hawaii and UC Riverside was suspended due to rain and is scheduled to resume Sunday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
The first game of the doubleheader was scoreless with one out in the top of third when the teams were waved off the field for a third time in the afternoon. The game will be picked up at that point at 1 p.m. Sunday, weather permitting.
After UCR pulled out a 2-1 win in Friday’s Big West opener, the Highlanders (29-7) and Rainbow Wahine (19-15) were scheduled to conclude the series Saturday before the rain washed out those plans and moved the doubleheader to Sunday.
The start of the game was delayed about 15 minutes and halted for 13 minutes again in the first inning. The teams waited about an hour through the third delay before the game was officially suspended.
UH sophomore Brittany Hitchcock (9-5) struck out four in the first two innings and had a 1-1 count on UCR’s Stephanie Tickemyer with one out in the third when the game was stopped.
UCR right-hander Chelsea Ponce (21-3) walked a batter in the first two innings and had thrown six of her 18 pitches for strikes. But she got out of the first with Leisha Li‘ili‘i’s lineout to center and escaped the second thanks to a double play.
