Dave Shoji and the University of Hawaii have reached an agreement in principle that will keep one of college volleyball’s winningest coaches at the school through the 2017 season.
The contract will require approval of the Board of Regents since the salary will exceed the $150,000 threshold.
The 68-year-old Shoji is 1,150-196-1 in 40 seasons with four national championships. Penn State’s Russ Rose passed Shoji last season as the all-time career victories leader in NCAA Division I women’s volleyball; Rose is 1,161-180 in 36 seasons with seven titles.
"We’ve come to a verbal agreement on a new contract, a three-year extension," athletic director Ben Jay confirmed Monday. "We’re in the process of getting the paperwork done."
Jay declined to say how much of a salary increase Shoji will receive until terms have been approved but described it as "a bump."
Shoji is believed to be making about $185,000.
The Rainbow Wahine were 22-7 last season.
"From a recruiting standpoint, from a longevity standpoint, it (the extension) makes sense," Jay said. "Dave is not done coaching and I think he is very excited about the team he has coming back and the recruits he has coming in the fall."
