Global consortium begins sea cable construction
Construction of a $250 million undersea broadband cable directly connecting Indonesia and the United States began Tuesday, it was announced by a partnership of seven telecommunication companies including Hawaiian Telcom.
The South-East Asia-United States submarine cable system will link Indonesia, the Philippines, Guam, Hawaii and California.
The cable spanning over 9,300 miles will help meet the growing demand of bandwidth, Hawaiian Telcom President and CEO Eric Yeaman said. “Today’s announcement signals the beginning of a truly vital project that will facilitate economic opportunity and growth for Hawaii’s residents and businesses,” he said. “Hawaii is no different from the rest of the world in its need and desire for more bandwidth.”
ON THE MOVE
The Queen’s Health Systems, corporate parent of the Queen’s Medical Center, has named Dr. Matthew Koenig as program director of telehealth/ telemedicine. He joined Queen’s in 2009 as an associate medical director of neurocritical care. In addition to his responsibilities in the Queen’s Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit, Koenig is an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Hawaii at Manoa’s John A. Burns School of Medicine.
The Hawaii Employers Council has announced the following appointments:
» Jason Yoshimi has been appointed chairman of the nonprofit HEC’s Board of Governors for 2015.
He is president and chief financial officer of the Hawaii Employers’ Mutual Insurance Co. and has been with HEMIC for 17 years.
» Additional appointments to the council’s executive committee: Percy Higashi from Roberts Hawaii; John Schapperle, Island Insurance Cos.; Toby Taniguchi, KTA Super Stores; Mark Tsuda, Surf Line Hawaii; Laura Smith, Goodwill Industries of Hawaii; and Clayton Kamida, Hawaii Employers Council.
