Hawaii’s offense made it up to L.J. Brewster on Thursday.
A week after getting shut out to waste a gem by Brewster in a loss to UC Irvine, the Rainbow Warriors bailed him out with their highest run total in their past 17 Big West Conference games.
Kaeo Aliviado went 3-for-5 with a double and a career-high four RBIs and Stephen Ventimilia hit a two-run single and scored three times in an 8-3 victory over UC Davis in front of a Les Murakami Stadium crowd of 1,426.
The Rainbow Warriors (10-19, 1-3 Big West) snapped a four-game losing streak, but more important, got their first conference win of the season.
The eight runs were their most in a Big West game since a 9-1 victory over Cal State Northridge last April.
"This was without a question a full-moon game. It was really bizarre," Hawaii coach Mike Trapasso said. "L.J. didn’t have it from the get-go … but we won that game with offense."
Hawaii led 5-3 in the seventh inning when Aliviado hit an RBI double over the head of Austin March in left to score Ventimilia.
Aliviado then added a two-run single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth for the final cushion. He had been 2-for-20 in his past five games.
"I just had to get back into the cage and get extra reps," Aliviado said. "You can’t help if the ball’s not falling but you have to keep coming out here and keep putting on good swings."
UC Davis (18-8-1, 3-1) had a seven-game winning streak snapped and dropped out of a first-place tie with UC Irvine.
Brewster nearly came out with two outs in the third inning and was down to his last batter according to Trapasso, but struck out Spencer Henderson looking with runners on first and second.
He threw an eight-pitch perfect inning in the fourth and managed to get into the sixth to avoid his shortest outing of the year, but was credited with seven walks allowed in 52⁄3 innings. He hit a batter and threw four wild pitches but limited the damage to three runs on five hits with five strikeouts.
"L.J. has been a good front-end guy of our rotation and he didn’t have all of his stuff today, but he’s a fighter and that’s what we love about him," Aliviado said. "It felt good to pick him up and get a ‘W.’"
Aggies starter Spencer Koopmans (2-3) gave up five runs in the first two innings but managed to get through six in the loss.
UC Davis got out to a 1-0 lead doing what its done all season. Tino Lipson reached on a one-out single and took second on the next pitch for the Aggies’ Big West-leading 72nd stolen base.
First baseman Nick Lynch followed with a run-scoring double, his 18th of the season, which leads the nation.
Hawaii answered with a two-out RBI single by Alex Sawelson and then poured it on in the second.
Ventimilia hit a two-run single off Koopmans to make it 4-1 and Aliviado’s two-out RBI single gave UH a four-run lead through two innings.
Ventimilia also drew a leadoff walk and scored in the seventh.
"We got the hits when we needed them and got the runs to give L.J. some wiggle room," Ventimilia said. "I can’t get really too high (on scoring) because it’s my job to do that and I have to keep coming out and doing the same thing every day."
Kyle Von Ruden relieved Brewster in the middle of an at-bat to Tanner Bily, who was ahead 2-0, and walked him before getting Lipson to fly out to right with two runners on base.
In the seventh inning, Von Ruden looked to have gotten an inning-ending double play, but the batter was allowed to take first on the second catcher’s interference call of the game.
Trapasso went to reliever Matt Valencia, who struck out the next two to end the inning. Valencia allowed one hit in a scoreless eighth and Cody Culp gave up a meaningless two-out single in a scoreless ninth to end the game.
