Kalihi fire causes $681,000 in damage
A fire Thursday caused about $681,000 in damage to two Kalihi buildings, a fire official said Friday.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
A two-story home at 1240 Kaauwai Place is a total loss, with damage estimated at $400,000 to the structure and $150,000 to the home’s contents. A multi-unit, two-story building next door suffered about $150,000 in damage to the structure and $1,000 to items in the building.
The three-alarm fire broke out just after 4 p.m. and left 23 people homeless.
One man, the son of a couple who lived in the two-story home, suffered burns. Another neighbor was treated for smoke inhalation.
Homeless man charged in Makiki break-in
A 52-year-old homeless man was charged Wednesday with breaking into a storage shed in Makiki in January.
Herbert French was arrested Wednesday for allegedly breaking into a storage shack Jan. 12 and stealing items stored in it.
Besides the second-degree burglary charge, French was charged Wednesday night with theft, failure to obey a police officer and resisting arrest. His bail was set at $50,000. He was picked up on South King Street near the Makiki Zippy’s restaurant.
Brick allegedly thrown during argument
Police arrested a 27-year-old Nanakuli man Thursday morning for allegedly throwing a brick at a 56-year-old man.
Police said the younger man threw the brick at the older man during an argument about 7:40 a.m. Wednesday. The older man told police he was trying to deflect the brick, when it struck and injured his right hand.
Police found and arrested the suspect at 8:15 a.m. on suspicion of second-degree assault.
